Dec. 8, 2011 | Wearing sleigh bell wristbands, Santa hats, and other red and white attire, a group of  UAMS Head Start preschoolers brought enthusiastic performances of traditional holiday favorites to UAMS administrators and staff this week.

“My goodness!” Chancellor Dan Rahn, M.D., said as he walked in to greet the carolers, noting their cheerful dress.

“Good morning!” the 3- and 4-year-olds responded in unison.

The carolers began with a spirited performance of Up on the Rooftop, followed by Feliz Navidad, Little Drummer Boy, Jingle Bells, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, and We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

UAMS employees came out of their offices and some even joined in the signing.

“Thank you very, very much for performing for us,” Rahn said. “Great singing voices; I could really hear it.”

The group presented Rahn with an oversized Christmas card and gleefully pointed out their names on the card.

After posing for photos, the students from the King Head Start
facility handed out the remainder of their holiday candy treats and shouted “Merry Christmas” as they left.

The following day, a group of students from the Silver City Head Start facility entertained UAMS College of Medicine Dean Debra H. Fiser, M.D., in similar fashion. Fiser and others in the College of Medicine administrative offices smiled and clapped along as the students performed.

UAMS runs the Head Start-Early Head Start program in Pulaski County under director Mary Kaye McKinney. The 22 locations serve 1,178 students from low-income homes. Head Start offers health, education and social services to its students.

The caroling is now an 11-year tradition at UAMS during the holiday season.
