Oct. 9, 2013 | Friends and supporters of UAMS Medical Center sampled 10 creative bacon-based dishes Saturday and then voted for their favorite in an event benefiting hospital patients and families in need.

The first Rock Town Bacon Throwdown at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock featured 10 local professional chefs all serving samples of dishes that included bacon as an ingredient. Proceeds from the event, hosted by the UAMS Medical Center Auxiliary’s Aux Crew of young professionals, will go to the UAMS Patient Support Fund.

“We were pleased to sell out of tickets for what turned out to be a very fun event that will go a long way in helping our Patient Support Fund,” said Erin Gray, director of the UAMS Medical Center Department of Volunteer and Auxiliary Services.

The first place winner, selected by judges, was Chef Greg Wallis from Afterthought Bistro & Bar. His dish was bacon-wrapped meatloaf with truffle mashed potatoes and caramelized onions.

Second place went to Chef Scott Rains from Table 28 with third place going to Chef Jeffrey Owen from Ciao Baci. Rains also received the People’s Choice Award by having the most votes from ticket holders.

The fund has helped hospital patients in need with a change of clothing or a travel voucher and awarded grants that have purchased hospital equipment and items such as car seats for patients in the neonatal intensive care unit and special pillows for heart patients.
