UAMS Seminar to Offer Insight on Prostate Cancer Screening
| LITTLE ROCK – A free seminar at 7 p.m. Oct. 15 at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) will offer options and recommendations for prostate cancer screening.
The seminar will be held on the 12th floor of the UAMS Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute. Free parking is available in parking deck 3 at the corner of Cedar Street and Capitol Avenue.
Based on individual risk factors and an informed decision-making approach, screening may be recommended for men between the ages of 40-75. Participants will learn about screening guidelines, which have recently changed based on the most recent results of two large clinical trials in America and Europe.
Screening guidelines are established by the American Urological Association, American Cancer Society, National Comprehensive Cancer Network, American College of Physicians and United States Preventative Services Task Force.
Seminar participants also will have the opportunity to participate in a survey about how best to communicate information about prostate cancer screenings and will have access to a website with additional decision-making information material.
According to the American Cancer Society, about 2,370 men in Arkansas received a new prostate cancer diagnosis in 2013 and about 320 died of the disease.
