Center for Health Literacy Wins APEX Award for Wellness Guide

By Linda Haymes

The award, sponsored by Communications Concepts Inc., is an annual competition for publishers, editors, writers and designers who create print, web, electronic and social media. More than 1,200 entries were submitted to this year’s competition.

The center’s “How to M.O.V.E. toward Emotional Wellness” guide in English received an Award of Excellence in the Health and Medical Writing category. Contest entries were judged on excellence in graphic design, editorial content and the success of the entry in achieving overall communications effectiveness and excellence.

A sample of the handbook can be found at https://healthliteracy.uams.edu/for-healthcare-professionals/patient-engagment-resources/how-to-m-o-v-e-toward-emotional-wellness/.

It uses the acronym M.O.V.E. to help readers remember what they learned. The book covers:

  • Changes that may signal that your emotional wellness needs attention
  • Things you can do to improve your emotional wellness or keep it where it is
  • What you might say to someone else to encourage them to pay attention to their emotional wellness
  • How to get help from a professional to improve emotional wellness

Through funding from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, copies of this guide are available to Arkansas community organizations at no cost by emailing healthliteracy@uams.edu.

A Spanish adaptation, ¡Cómo dar un P.A.S.O. hacia el Bienestar Emocional!, will be available soon as an interactive web-based module. For information on accessing these materials, email healthliteracy@uams.edu.
