UAMS’ Cam Patterson, M.D., MBA, Makes Becker’s List of Top Physician Leaders

By Yavonda Chase

Patterson was one of 145 leaders — and the only one in Arkansas — recognized by the publication. Becker’s Healthcare is a publisher that is considered an industry leader in health care information.

“I am incredibly honored to have been nominated and selected for this list,” said Patterson. “The other honorees on this list are a veritable who’s who of health care leadership, so I count myself fortunate to be included in such distinguished company.”

As chancellor of UAMS, Patterson leads Arkansas’ only academic medical center and health sciences university. As CEO of UAMS Health, he also leads a growing health system that consists of a main campus in Little Rock and eight regional campuses around the state.

A renowned cardiologist, Patterson earned his Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Vanderbilt University, his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine, and his Master of Business Administration from the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler School of Business. He joined UAMS in 2018, coming from New York, where he was the chief operating officer of New York Presbyterian/Weill-Cornell Medical Center.

“The leaders featured on this list have exhibited outstanding leadership skills and clinical excellence. They are using their prowess to enhance and improve the health care industry,” Becker’s said in a news release announcing the list.

Becker’s Hospital Review accepted nominations, which its editorial team used to select the honorees. The list was sponsored by TeamHealth. Individuals do not pay, and cannot pay, to be included.

UAMS is the state’s only health sciences university, with colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Health Professions and Public Health; a graduate school; a hospital; a main campus in Little Rock; a Northwest Arkansas regional campus in Fayetteville; a statewide network of regional campuses; and eight institutes: the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute, Harvey & Bernice Jones Eye Institute, Psychiatric Research Institute, Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging, Translational Research Institute, Institute for Digital Health & Innovation and the Institute for Community Health Innovation. UAMS includes UAMS Health, a statewide health system that encompasses all of UAMS’ clinical enterprise. UAMS is the only adult Level 1 trauma center in the state. UAMS has 3,275 students, 890 medical residents and fellows, and five dental residents. It is the state’s largest public employer with more than 12,000 employees, including 1,200 physicians who provide care to patients at UAMS, its regional campuses, Arkansas Children’s, the VA Medical Center and Baptist Health.
