UAMS’ Simon Mears, M.D., Ph.D., Named to Prestigious Knee Society

By Linda Satter

The academic, invitation-only national organization represents the world’s most influential surgeons and researchers in knee replacement. It is committed to advancing the care of patients with knee disorders through leadership in education and research, with a focus on total knee arthroplasty and the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis and other disease processes that lead to end-stage arthritis of the knee.

“Simon Mears is very deserving of recognition from this distinguished group, and we are so glad that UAMS Orthopaedics has him on our team,” said Lowry Barnes, M.D., chair of the UAMS Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Barnes himself is widely recognized as one of the foremost joint replacement experts in the nation.

Mears, a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in hip and knee joint-related conditions, has been at UAMS since 2015. He is a professor of orthopaedic surgery in the UAMS College of Medicine.

Mears earned his medical and doctoral degrees in neurobiology from the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his orthopaedic residency at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and two fellowships — one in orthopaedic traumatology at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland and the other in hip and knee replacement at the Mayo Clinic.

Before coming to UAMS, he practiced at Johns Hopkins University for 10 years and served as chair of orthopaedic surgery at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

He sees patients at the UAMS Health Orthopaedic Clinic at 2 Shackelford W. Blvd. in Little Rock.

UAMS is the state’s only health sciences university, with colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Health Professions and Public Health; a graduate school; a hospital; a main campus in Little Rock; a Northwest Arkansas regional campus in Fayetteville; a statewide network of regional campuses; and eight institutes: the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute, Harvey & Bernice Jones Eye Institute, Psychiatric Research Institute, Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging, Translational Research Institute, Institute for Digital Health & Innovation and the Institute for Community Health Innovation. UAMS includes UAMS Health, a statewide health system that encompasses all of UAMS’ clinical enterprise. UAMS is the only adult Level 1 trauma center in the state. UAMS has 3,275 students, 890 medical residents and fellows, and five dental residents. It is the state’s largest public employer with more than 12,000 employees, including 1,200 physicians who provide care to patients at UAMS, its regional campuses, Arkansas Children’s, the VA Medical Center and Baptist Health.
