Neurosurgeon Hector Enrique Soriano-Baron, M.D., Joins UAMS as Co-Director of Spine Services

By Linda Satter

An assistant professor in the UAMS College of Medicine departments of Neurosurgery and Orthopaedic Surgery, Soriano-Baron was previously on the faculty at the Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Georgia, where he was also in private practice.

He earned his medical degree with honors in 2004 at Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico in Mexico City and completed a neurosurgical residency at the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery in Mexico City. At the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, he then completed two postdoctoral fellowships — a research fellowship in biomechanics of the spine and a clinical spinal research fellowship.

Soriano-Baron went on to complete a second residency in neurosurgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, followed by a third fellowship in complex spine and robotic surgery at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

UAMS spine services includes neurosurgery and orthopaedics. Soriano-Baron directs the neurosurgery side while David B. Bumpass, M.D., an orthopaedic surgeon, directs the orthopaedic side.

Soriano-Baron said he has long admired the work of the UAMS Department of Neurosurgery, and, “coming to work here in a leadership position has a very special meaning for me.”

“My role as co-director will focus on making sure we are providing the best spinal care for all Arkansans with a caring, multidisciplinary approach to all our patients, especially now that we have The Orthopaedic & Spine Hospital,” he said, referring to the four-story, 158,000-square-foot surgical facility that opened in June on the UAMS campus.

Soriano-Baron is seeing patients in the UAMS Neurosurgery Clinic on the second floor of the UAMS Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute in Little Rock. Appointments are by referral only. Patients with a referral can call 501-686-5270 to make an appointment.
