Geriatric Care Conference Set for Sept. 26-28 at UAMS Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging

By Chris Carmody

Health professionals, patients, caregivers and members of the community are invited to learn about the latest findings in geriatric care. They’ll hear updates on topics such as cancer, cardiopulmonary and renal diseases, diabetes management, gastrointestinal diseases, medication development, neurocognitive disorders, prescription opioids and non-pharmacological aspects of healing.

The final day of the conference will focus on resources for the caregivers of those with cognitive impairment and memory disorders.

“This conference offers a great opportunity to see how new research and treatments are helping us enhance our patients’ quality of life,” said Jeanne Wei, M.D., Ph.D., executive director of the Institute on Aging.

Guest lecturers include James Galvin, M.D., MPH, professor of neurology and psychiatry at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine. His lecture will focus on clinical evaluation, biomarkers and therapeutics for Lewy body dementia.

Ann Kolanowski, Ph.D., RN, professor emerita at the University of Pennsylvania, will speak about the connections between delirium and dementia.

The conference is free for members of the public, who can attend either in-person or virtually. The registration deadline is Sept. 26.
