UAMS-Sponsored Senior Expo Attracts More Than 1,000
| Nov. 8, 2017 | For the fourth consecutive year at the Statehouse Convention Center in downtown Little Rock, more than 1,000 seniors and baby boomers made the Senior Expo boom again.
Sponsored by UAMS and presented by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, the event pulled visitors from throughout central Arkansas and beyond.

More than 200 seniors received free health screenings for blood glucose, blood pressure and heart rate, body mass index and body fat percentage as well as medication and vaccination education.
The UAMS Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging provided geriatricians to give free consultations at 48 scheduled appointments at the “Ask the Doctor” booths. UAMS Harvey & Bernice Jones Eye Institute staff performed 75 vision screenings.
Mega Brain from the Arkansas Stroke Assistance and Virtual Emergency Support (AR SAVES) program also made an appearance at the Senior Expo to help educate the public about stroke and other brain injuries and diseases.
“Public attendance and participation at each year’s Senior Expo, including this one, has shown there is continued interest and a real, sustained need for them,” said Jeanne Wei, M.D., Ph. D., director of the Reynolds Institute. “UAMS again was an active educator, not a passive institutional sponsor. Many medical, nursing, and pharmacy faculty, and graduate students and research assistants put in a lot of hard work making sure this event would come together for seniors.”
Among the UAMS services and medical specialties represented at the Expo with booths were geriatrics, orthopaedics, caregiver training, the vascular center and nutrition services.
Presentations made by UAMS physicians included: “Calling All Seniors: Healthy Is the New Wealthy,” Jeanne Wei; “Active Joints for an Active Life,” orthopedist Jeffery Stambough, M.D.; “Kicking Your Aching Back to the Curb! Options for Dealing with Your Spine Pain,” neurosurgeons Noojan Kazemi, M.D., and Christopher Paul, M.D.; and “Eagle Eye: Optimizing Vision as You Age,” ophthalmologist Romona Davis, M.D.
