Audiology, Speech Pathology Students Don White Coats

One of the many things the white coat represents for students pursuing degrees in the health care field is a fresh start. For the first-year students in the UAMS Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology, the department’s white coat ceremony on Aug. 20 marked the formal beginning of the next phase of their academic lives.

Grant Funds Interprofessional Training to Combat Opioid Overdose

Grant funds will support the development and evaluation of a curriculum for administration of naloxone, used to counteract the effects of opioid overdose.

Researchers from the Colleges of Nursing, Pharmacy and Health Professions’ Physician Assistant program are combining efforts to battle the opioid epidemic through overdose education.

Maybe it’s fitting to start with the beginnings, recent white coat ceremonies in the UAMS College of Health Professions.

If you’re unfamiliar with this annual tradition in health care education, students at or near the start of their studies put on their white coats for the first time in a ceremony before family and friends, symbolizing their entry into their career and a commitment to professionalism.

Spotlight on the Department of Occupational Therapy

As with the College of Health Professions as a whole, the important work of the department has continued during the COVID-19 pandemic. The second cohort of 26 students began coursework on Jan. 2, 2021. We have retained 100% of the first cohort (professional year 2s –PY2s), and they have completed two Level 1 Fieldwork experiences.

May often brings graduations and happy endings to the studies of many types of students.

But for the first-year students in the UAMS department of Physician Assistant Studies and fourth-year audiology students in Audiology and Speech Pathology, the month and the departments’ white coat ceremonies marked the formal beginning of the next phase of their academic lives.
