Mammograms Available Feb. 24 in Marvell
| MARVELL – The Delta Area Health Education Center (Delta AHEC) of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) will offer women who are 40 years of age and older free and low-cost screening mammograms Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Marvell, Ark., in Phillips County.
Health care professionals from St. Bernard’s Medical Center in Jonesboro, Ark., will perform the mammograms in the center’s mobile mammography unit. The unit will be stationed at Boys, Girls and Adult Development Center on Highway 49 South in Marvell. Women with existing breast problems cannot be screened at this event. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that is used to detect breast cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends that women 40 and older have annual screening mammograms. Medicare, Medicaid and most private health insurance companies cover all or part of the cost for this exam. The Witness Project – one of the community-based cancer education programs of the Arkansas Cancer Research Center at UAMS – helps uninsured and underinsured women obtain mammograms.
The Delta AHEC encourages health promotion and disease prevention through education of health professionals and the general public in the Arkansas counties of Chicot, Crittenden, Desha, Lee, Monroe, Phillips and St. Francis. Other supporters of these screening mammograms are the Arkansas Department of Health, the Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund, St. Bernard’s Medical Center and the Lee County Cooperative Clinic.
