Jose Romero, M.D., Receives Mexico’s Ohtli Award for His Efforts in Fight Against COVID-19

Jose Romero, M.D., (left) received the Ohtli Award from Rodolfo Quilantan Arenas (right) from the Mexican Consulate in Little Rock. The Ohtli Award is the highest award given by the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs to persons residing outside of Mexico.

LITTLE ROCK — Jose Romero, M.D., professor in the Department of Pediatrics in the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) who also serves as the Arkansas Secretary of Health and director of the Arkansas Department of Health, recently received the Ohtli Award, the highest award given by the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs to persons residing outside of Mexico.

UAMS Offers Booster COVID Vaccines

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) will begin offering third doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to qualifying individuals on Monday, Sept. 27, at the Vaccine Clinic at 401 S. Monroe St. in Little Rock. This clinic also provides seasonal flu vaccines.

LITTLE ROCK — AR-Connect, a University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) program that provides mental health care via live video, is offering its services to Gulf Coast natives forced to relocate to Arkansas due to the devastation left behind by Hurricane Ida.


Grant Funds Interprofessional Training to Combat Opioid Overdose

Grant funds will support the development and evaluation of a curriculum for administration of naloxone, used to counteract the effects of opioid overdose.

Researchers from the Colleges of Nursing, Pharmacy and Health Professions’ Physician Assistant program are combining efforts to battle the opioid epidemic through overdose education.

Summer Camp Introduces High School Students to Health Careers

More than 150 high school students from across Arkansas poured into UAMS – virtually, due to pandemic restrictions – this summer to learn more about a broad range of careers in health care.
