Osteoporosis Drug Raloxifene as Effective as Tamoxifen in Preventing Invasive Breast Cancer, Initial Study Results Show

LITTLE ROCK – Initial results of the Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene, or STAR, show that the drug raloxifene, currently used to prevent and treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, works as well as tamoxifen in reducing breast cancer risk for postmenopausal women at increased risk of the disease. The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) participated in this clinical trial, one of the largest breast cancer prevention trials ever conducted.

LITTLE ROCK – The medical technology program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) will host an open house from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 22, at St. Edward’s Mercy Medical Center in Fort Smith to discuss the laboratory sciences profession and the growing demand for new technologists.

“A Call to Service: Minimizing the Effects of Trauma” is sponsored by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine, the Arkansas Psychological Association and the Arkansas Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.

UAMS to Offer Free Oral Cancer Screenings

LITTLE ROCK — The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is offering free oral cancer screenings from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. April 21 on the sixth floor of the Arkansas Cancer Research Center (ACRC). Screenings will be conducted by the UAMS Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery.
